Founded in 1991, the Canadian Heritage Arts Society (CHAS) was created to promote the arts through performance and education. With a national focus, the organization launched the highly acclaimed touring program Experience Canada, which included the production Spirit of a Nation, created by CHAS co-founders Janis Dunning, C.M., and Jacques Lemay, C.M. The production reached more than 800,000 people at festivals, in schools, and in theatres across the country.

In 1998, to promote higher education and support young people wishing to establish careers in the performing arts while contributing to Canadian society, CHAS and its founders established the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA). Located in south Oak Bay, this uniquely focused training program attracts students from across Canada and around the world, and now boasts more than 850 alumni who have successfully entered the profession.
An Afternoon Behind the Scenes
Victoria Circle members and guests recently enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at a choreography rehearsal for the College’s signature year-end musical, Newsies. As they prepared for opening night, the 43 students demonstrated their passion for the art form, along with their strength and talent in singing, dancing and bringing the essence of the story to life.
Following the rehearsal, members and guests gathered over tea and treats to connect with one another, the students and Erin Gavaghan, Managing Director of the Canadian Heritage Arts Society.

Honouring Legacy and Community Impact
The Victoria Circle was created in 2011 to mark the Foundation’s 75th anniversary, recognizing and celebrating individuals who have shared their intention to support the future of their community through a gift in their will or other estate plan.
As we celebrate our 90th anniversary this year, we honour the more than 400 Victoria Circle members who have placed their trust in the Foundation. Together, we work to fulfill our purpose: to create a sense of belonging that inspires philanthropy, essential partnerships and collaboration, making a lasting contribution to our community. Our Victoria Circle members are very much part of this story.

A long-standing community partner, CHAS established an endowed fund at the Victoria Foundation in 2005. This fund, together with other designated funds, provides a steady stream of operating support and scholarships for the organization. Over the years, CHAS has also been eligible for matching funds from the Department of Canadian Heritage.
We are deeply grateful to the members of the Victoria Circle for placing their trust in the Victoria Foundation. By supporting the future of the causes most important to them, they demonstrate the lasting impact of collective philanthropy, today and for generations to come.
Thank you to the students, staff and faculty of the Canadian College of Performing Arts for sharing their passion with our community. It was truly an inspiring and exhilarating afternoon.
