LDABC The Learning Curve Society mission is to support, educate and advocate for children experiencing learning and behaviour challenges, their families and care providers. The society provides a range of programs and services that focus on reading and writing remediation, academic skill development, strengthening emotional development and educating families and care providers to best support children with diverse learning needs.
The Victoria Foundation and LDABC The Learning Curve are celebrating significant milestones this year. As the Victoria Foundation celebrates 90 years of supporting our community, The Learning Curve is celebrating its 45th anniversary, and together we share 25 years of partnership.
Our endowment fund was started when Sandra Wieland, a long-time member and past president created the fund through the Foundation to support children and families that required financial assistance to access effective remediation programs through the centre.
We are also the grateful recipients of matching grants through the Smart and Caring Community Fund to help grow the endowment and increase the benefits to children and families in our community. This partnership reflects a confidence in the future to continue serving the community with stability and care.
In addition to the endowment fund, our programs receive critical funding through the Vital Grant Stream of the Victoria Foundation’s Community Grants Program. This funding provides direct support for three key program areas:
Child and youth services
These services are offered in person and online to ensure access for families that face barriers. We recognize that literacy requires more than A, B, C’s and 1,2,3’s and many children require additional supports to help their brains to rest and learn.
An assessment is completed with each child and family to determine the best placement to ensure success. Some children are placed in the Reading and Writing Remediation program while others may require additional supports to address anxiety or attention challenges before moving into more intensive instruction.
Family consultation services
These flexible services are offered in person or through phone and online consultations. The goal of the program is to empower parents and care providers with confidence in their important role in the developmental growth of their children. When children are struggling, caring parents often experience alarm and stress and can spend significant time looking for services or waiting on waitlists, when in fact they have tremendous insight and understanding of their children and what can assist them with developing their capacity and resilience.
Outreach services
Workshops and consultation sessions are offered to early childhood educators and other professionals. Topics covered include anxiety, attention and self-regulation, challenging behaviour “Through the Eyes of a Child” and strategies for supporting children with learning.
These programs equip adults with a deeper understanding of how children learn and develop, helping them create supportive environments at home, in schools and in community settings so children reach their potential. Advocacy resources and educational information to help families navigate the school system and work collaboratively with educators is also provided.
Overall, with the support of the Victoria Foundation these programs take a comprehensive approach, addressing academic, emotional, and social needs while also supporting the adults who are the best bet to guide and care for children. Through individualized instruction, literacy development, education workshops and advocacy, the organization helps learners build the skills and confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond.
We look forward to continuing this important relationship for many years to come, working together to strengthen our community and create opportunities for learning and growth.
Happy 90th anniversary to the Victoria Foundation and thank you for being such an integral part of our journey, in the lives touched, and the learners and families supported.
