Philanthropy is built on relationships
Upon reflecting on the past 10 years working at the Victoria Foundation, I’ve come to appreciate that philanthropy is far more complex and rewarding than I initially imagined.
What began as a commitment to helping donors make a difference has evolved into a deeper understanding of generosity, community resilience and the responsibility that comes with stewarding resources for social good.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that philanthropy is ultimately about relationships.
While donations and grants are essential, meaningful impact often emerges from trust, collaboration and a shared commitment to creating positive change.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside donors, non-profit leaders, community organizations and colleagues, who each bring unique perspectives and passions.
The strongest outcomes have come not from transactional exchanges, but from authentic relations built over time.
What continues to inspire me most is the generosity of people. I have witnessed acts of giving from individuals at every stage of life and from every economic background.
Some gifts are transformative in size; others are transformative in spirit. Behind each gift is a story, a value or a vision for a better future. Being entrusted with those aspirations is both a privilege and a responsibility.
The role of Professional Advisors in charitable giving
Another important aspect of my career has been working alongside professional advisors who help their clients achieve their philanthropic goals.
These advisors play a critical role in the charitable ecosystem. They often have longstanding relationships with individuals and families and are uniquely positioned to help clients explore how their values can be reflected through their giving.
Over the years, I have come to appreciate the meaningful partnership between philanthropy professionals and advisors.
Together, we help donors navigate complex decisions, align charitable giving with financial and estate planning objectives and create lasting legacies that benefit both families and communities.

Some of the most impactful philanthropic journeys I have witnessed have been the result of strong collaboration between donors, advisors and charitable organizations, each contributing their expertise to achieve a shared vision.
These relationships have also reinforced an important lesson: philanthropy is not simply about financial transactions; it is about helping people articulate their values, define the impact they wish to have and create a meaningful connection between their resources and their purpose.
Professional advisors are often trusted guides in these conversations, and it is a privilege to work with them in supporting donors through some of the most thoughtful and significant decisions of their lives.
These relationships highlight the important role professional advisors play in advancing philanthropic impact.
As I reflect on the past decade, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a sector that strives to make communities stronger and more equitable.
This work has taught me patience, empathy and the importance of continuous learning. It has reinforced my belief that while philanthropy alone cannot solve every challenge, it can catalyze change, build bridges and empower people to create a lasting difference.
